Commercial Finish Polishing Steps
 

When creating a commercial concrete polishing floor, there are several steps to follow to ensure the installation will be done properly.

  1. To level out big variations in the surface or remove any coatings on an older floor, use a metal-bond diamond tool, such as a 20/30 grit. If there is no lippage problem or coating, begin with a 50/60 grit metal diamond or a 100/120 grit metal diamond. The appearance of the finished project will be determined by the building owner. The first cut is also used to let the floor allow the densifier to soak in. If enough space isn’t created, the floor won’t be as durable as it might be and its life will end sooner. If you’re using a 50/60 grit metal diamond, sand with 100/120 grit metal diamonds nearby to prevent reducing the scratch marks at 50/60.
  2. It’s usually a good idea to fill in the gaps, pin-holes, and hairline fractures created while grinding with a grout. Grouts produce a much cleaner floor with greater clarity. Acrylic-based grouts are simple to use and should be used towards the end of metal-bond diamond grinding. Spray some water on dampen the floor, then pour in the grout and “broom in” (the broom will remove dust from the pores). While the acrylic-based grout is still wet, use a metal diamond grinder to grind over the surface. This creates a slurry and fills the pores, resulting in a slicker floor. After that, clean the floor using a foam squeegee. Do not utilize a brooms or vacuum since this might remove some of the grout from the pores.
  3. At this stage, it is a good idea to add more cement and grout to the floor. The densifier will harden the cement and grout, ensuring that when you grind, the grout does not come out. Hybrid diamonds, such as ceramics, may be used once the densifier has fully dried. These hybrid diamonds are more aggressive than resins and aid novice operators in removing accidental scratches caused by metal-bond diamonds. 100-grit hybrids should be followed by 200-grit hybrids. These grits are honing the concrete and should remove any obvious scratches visible upon completion.
  4. Clean with a clean cloth and then using the same procedure, polish with 400-grit resin abrasives. Depending on gloss requirements, this may be the final stage. If necessary, 800-grit resin pads can be used to increase gloss and clarity on the floor. The 400-grit resin is sufficient to polish the floor while maintaining a good slip coefficient for commercial/industrial use.
  5. The final step is to cover the completed floor with a guard. In most cases, a topical sealer is not the best choice for a high-traffic space. The main distinction is that a guard goes through the concrete and leaves only a residue on the surface. When the concrete has fully cured, the guard is polished off and the concrete becomes a wear surface. A sealer is topical and must be heated with a high-speed burnisher to cure. While both will preserve the floor, due to their topical nature, they will ultimately degrade over time and need regular maintenance in high-use areas.
